This Eva Longoria biography tells the story of a Mexican-American girl who grew up being the ugly duckling and became a beautiful successful Hispanic woman. She described herself as the odd one because of her dark eyes, dark hair and dark skin compared to her three other sister’s fair skin tone.
Believe it or not, she was used to be called the prieta fea or the ugly one. Eva admits that she was a late bloomer but her long wait at success made her appreciate it even more.
Born in Corpus Christi, Texas, Eva Longoria was raised as a Roman Catholic by her parents Enrique Longoria Jr. and Ella Eva Mireles. The Longoria family traced their roots from the old Spanish surname de Langoria who became rich farmers in Mexico in the 17th century.
Her father worked on the farmland that was handed down from past generations, but her parents struggled to provide a decent living for their children. The hardships of her early life did not dampen her spirit to succeed.
Longoria attended Roy Miller High School, then received her bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology at Texas A&M University in Kingsville.
In 1998, Eva Longoria won the Miss Corpus Christi beauty pageant which paved the way for her to fly to L.A. to join a talent show which she subsequently won. She worked in L.A. as a corporate headhunter until she was signed by a theatrical agent.
Eva landed her first role on television in 2000 as a flight attendant in a single episode of Beverly Hills 90210. She followed it up as a Brenda Barrett look-alike role in General Hospital whose star Tyler Christopher became her husband in 2002 but she divorced in 2004.
Her first big break was the American soap opera “The Young and the Restless” where she played the psychotic Isabella Brana Williams for two seasons from 2001-2003. She would later comment on his stay at the soap opera making a minimum wage by saying that it opened the door for other opportunities.
In 2004, Eva was casted on the ABC hit “Desperately Housewives” that lifted her up to the A-1 list where she shared starring role with television veterans Marcia Cross, Teri Hatcher, Nicollette Sheridan and Felicity Huffman. The show was an overnight sensation and Eva Langoria in Desperate Housewives was introduced to a worldwide audience.
Her role as Gabrielle Solis was like tailor-made for her hilarious personality. When the creator of the show asked her what she thought of the story, she told him that she had no idea because she just read her part. Her answer elicited a good laugh from the creator and he told her that she got the job.
Along her co-stars in “Desperate Housewives”, she was nominated for a Golden Globe Best Performance by an Actress award in 2006. Though she didn’t win it, Eva was named as the “Entertainer of the Year” in the ALMA Awards.
The famous Hispanic actress’ first major role in the big screen came in 2006 in the thriller “The Sentinel” which she starred opposite Kiefer Sutherland and Michael Douglas. Then she again appeared as “Sylvia” in “Harsh Times” where she co-starred with Christian Bale and Freddy Rodriquez.
After months of dating Tony Parker, the Spurs point guard took a flight to L.A. after a game and surprised Eva with a wedding proposal. They were engaged on November 30, 2006 and got married in Paris on July 2007.
Their marriage ended in 2010 when Eva Longoria found many text messages on Tony’s phone from Brent Barry, Parker’s former teammate.
She filed for divorce on on November 17, 2010 arguing “irreconcilable differences.” Tony filed on the 20th for divorce arguing “discord or conflict of personalities.” The marriage had a prenup and Tony is looking to come to “an agreement for the division of their estate.” Eva on the other hand is looking for spousal support.
In 2008, Eva Longoria became a businesswoman when she opened a steakhouse called Beso (kiss) in West Hollywood and opened another one in Las Vegas in 2009. In total she owns 2 Latin-themed restaurants and 2 night clubs. Her plans are to start a series of mini Besos called Besitos in airports around the country.
Away from her “ugly duckling” past, Eva Langoria was voted among the sexiest and most beautiful woman by various magazines. She now holds modeling contracts with L’Oreal, Hanes and is the endorser of Bebe Sport, Heineken Beer and Magnum Ice-Cream.
The most fascinating part of Eva is her love for pulling efforts with other Latinos. She continues to be the producer of the Alma Awards, the spokesperson for Padres Contra el Cancer or Parents Against Cancer and runs her own charity called Eva’s Heroes.
Though her beauty and talent propelled her career, she credits her success to her unwavering determination and strong sense of self-discipline, that as a good Latina she says, she learnt it from her parents. With her steady rising career, there are no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
